The historic Bernly Private Hotel was built during 1937-38 at 15 Springfield Avenue, Kings Cross. An advertisement in 'The Land' newspaper on 18 November 1938 describes the Bernly as "Sydney's latest Private Hotel with 100 bedrooms, with hot and cold water and telephone in every room... The owner was F. J. Berne." During the Second World War, the Hotel was taken over by the military and became the Bernly American Red Cross Officer's Club. It reverted to a hotel after the war. In 1979 the building became known as The Manzil Room and became one of Kings Cross’ iconic rock venues hosting bands until it became Springfields in 1990. Hoodoo Gurus, Paul Kelly and Pseudo Echo were just some of the famous Australian bands that played there. From the early 1990s, it was a budget backpacker accommodation, but in 2015 it was refurbished to become the boutique art deco apartment hotel we see today.
